Despite the weekend’s controversy, Savannah State students still had plenty of reasons to celebrate. Just ask Upscale magazine, which recently selected SSU as the winner of the Institutions of Excellence Award for the Top Historically Black College/University in the country.

On Monday, Upscale magazine’s Editor-in-Chief, Sheila Bronner arrived at SSU to present the university with $5,000 in cash and prize giveaways at a special campus ceremony in the new Student Union.

SSU received the top honors based on the university’s graduation rates, enrollment, academic performance, school history and commitment to student academic achievement.

Based out of Atlanta, Upscale is a magazine company that provides news on business, entertainment, health, beauty, and lifestyle news for African Americans. The urban magazine has featured prominent black leaders in entertainment, business, and politics such as First Lady Michelle Obama, Tyler Perry, Mary J. Blige, and the late Michael Jackson.
