How to Avoid A Burnout
|
Posted By: Devon Marshall on June 10, 2009 How to Avoid A Burnout The work keeps piling into your inbox and there aren’t enough hours in the day to do it all. Plus, with numerous layoffs at your company, you’ve had to take on more tasks to fill in the gaps left behind. In other words, you're on the brink of a burnout. Here’s how you can step away from the edge and prevent a total meltdown. 1. Keep a journal detailing your day-to-day habits and try to spot any trends. How productive are you throughout the day? Do you stress during a particular time or around certain people? Once you realize what your triggers are, you’ll be able to take steps to reduce them or remove them altogether. 2. Just say no! How many times have you bitten off more than you could chew because you were afraid of letting someone down? Don’t be afraid to delegate or pass tasks up and choose ones you’re passionate about and can do well. 3. Instead of dwelling on the negative aspects of work, think about what you do like about your job. Are you working towards your goals? Are you fulfilling a lifelong dream? If you can’t think of anything good, it may be a sign that it’s time to reevaluate your career path. 4. Disconnect for a few minutes each day. Now that everyone’s accessible 24/7 via e-mails, texts, cell phones and instant messages, it’s important to pull the plug on technology and be “off” for a moment. 5. Turn to your support network. Reach out to friends and family for a hand when you need it and don’t be afraid to seek professional help if you constantly feel isolated and depressed. 6. Are you eating well, exercising and getting enough rest? Stress can trigger insomnia and changes in appetite. You’ll find that taking a breather and treating your body well will work wonders for your concentration and lower your anxiety levels. Use this “me time” to nourish your soul and regain your energy. 7. If you have a hard time with the above, create a schedule and block out when you’ll work and when you’ll play. Devoting yourself to one task at a time – instead of ten – will help you focus and get that job out of the way before moving on to the next item on your to-do list. 8. Use your vacation days. They’re given to you for a reason: because no one wants to work with a stressed-out cranky pants. So book a flight and high tail it out of there. (And no checking your e-mail on the beach!)
