Description
The Assistant Director of Student Care & Care Coordination reports to the Director for Student Support and Advocacy in the Division of Student Affairs and provides operational leadership, case management, and care coordination for students experiencing challenges that may interfere with their academic success. In partnership with the Director, the Assistant Director ensures the day-to-day execution of coordinated, non-clinical systems of care that support student wellbeing, resilience, and safety.
The Assistant Director provides direct support and coordination of services to students addressing academic and personal issues, including physical and mental health, safety, crisis and conflict resolution, family difficulties, financial challenges, food insecurity, housing instability, hospitalization, leave of absence, discrimination, sexual violence, and harassment.
The Assistant Director manages a non-clinical caseload of students, including students on leave of absence or returning from leave, and provides direct intervention, advocacy, and care coordination. The role drafts intervention and action plans for students referred through CARE, student conduct, Title IX and Nondiscrimination, or other units across the Institute, and refers students to appropriate campus and community resources as needed.
The Assistant Director supports the operations of the CARE Team and BIT, including organizing case materials, documentation, and follow-up, and collaborates closely with the Director on case escalation, compliance, and risk management. The Assistant Director actively collaborates and consults with faculty, staff, and community partners to support students in need and to promote consistent, student-centered care practices across the Institute.
The Assistant Director provides support to the Director and the Assistant Vice President for Student Health and Wellness on special projects and initiatives related to student care coordination, operational effectiveness, and student wellbeing.
Examples of Duties
Major activities and end results for which the position is accountable. Listed in rank order from high to low, in order of significance:
- Manage a revolving non-clinical caseload of students, assigned through CARE and the Director, providing ongoing support, follow-up, and care coordination.
- Provide intake, triage, and non-clinical crisis intervention, including needs assessments, de-escalation, and stabilization, and facilitate warm handoffs to appropriate campus and community resources.
- Draft and implement student intervention and action plans and monitor compliance with care recommendations in collaboration with Director and campus partners.
- Provide post-hospitalization and reentry support to students returning from mental or behavioral health settings, in coordination with Health Services and Counseling Services.
- Support and administer Medical Leave of Absence processes, including assisting students with explanations, documentation, and Tuition Refund Insurance claims, and escalating decisions to the Director as required.
- Provide advocacy, guidance, and accompaniment to students navigating complex academic, personal, or institutional situations.
- Support the operations of the CARE Team and BIT, including organizing agendas, case materials, documentation, and follow-up actions, and participating in case conferences with academic and administrative units.
- Monitor, respond to, and follow up on student-related items in Maxient and Starfish, coordinating with Title IX, Public Safety, Residential Life, Advising, Learning Access, and other partners.
- Coordinate wellness checks for non-residential students and collaborate with Residence Life staff on wellness and safety concerns as needed.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential electronic records, and manage highly sensitive student information in accordance with CARE protocols.
- Ensure adherence to FERPA, HIPAA, and other applicable laws, regulations, and institutional policies, and uphold the highest standards of confidentiality and professional practice.
- Collaborate with CARE colleagues to establish/implement best practices and support the development and implementation of system-wide care procedures.
- Consult with faculty and staff responding to students of concern and participate in outreach, training, and education related to student wellbeing and CARE processes.
- Support the management and tracking of student support funds, including emergency and food insecurity funding, and assist with data collection and reporting.
- Carry out special projects and operational initiatives on behalf of the Director and the Assistant Vice President for Student Health and Wellness.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Social Work, Counseling, Public Health, or a related field (required). Master's degree in a related field (preferred).
Experience: 2-3 years of experience in non-clinical case management, care coordination, crisis response, or related work in a higher education or comparable setting.
Skills: Excellent collaboration and written and oral communication skills; strong non-clinical counseling and crisis-response skills; demonstrated ability to manage complex caseloads; problem-solving skills; strong organizational abilities; and a high degree of cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed practice. **For consideration, please submit a cover letter and resume.
