Description

Pratt Institute is seeking a Temporary Foundation Technician who is a creative problem solver with excellent communication, technical, and organizational skills to support the analog facilities and Foundations Lab for the Foundation Department.

Under the general supervision of management, the shop technician will support the day-to-day operation of the Foundations Lab, and all Foundation studio workspaces in Main, East and South Halls. They join a team committed to fostering a safe, innovative, and robust culture of creating, and will provide students with practical technical support that will guide their practice in and beyond their time at Pratt. If you can demonstrate the ability to operate and oversee the use of analog and digital equipment and spaces, with experience collaborating in an educational or creative environment, we want to hear from you!

Examples of Duties


  • Care for and maintain the specimen collection in the Pratt Foundation Lab with assistance from Technical Director and Student workers
  • Organization and oversight of Foundation Department material storage and tool spaces; help devise and implement a system for shared resources, supplies, tools, and equipment between all courses in Foundation.
  • Perform weekly walkthroughs of Foundation classrooms (East Hall Studios, Main Hall Studios, and South Hall Studios) and weekly maintenance and upkeep of shared storage spaces to ensure healthy and safe working conditions.
  • Working with other foundation technicians, establish cleaning, maintenance, and safety protocols and make recommendations for shop and lab improvements to the Technical Director of Foundation.
  • Communicate regularly with Faculty for day-to-day facility concerns, and troubleshoot basic technical issues, including teaching stations, printers, and connectivity.
  • Manage check-out of digital equipment, including but not limited to iPads, Apple Pencils, RGB Flashlights, and lightboxes. Familiarity or experience with digital tools (Adobe, 3D rendering, etc) or microscopy would be an asset


Qualifications

Education: BA / BFA degree in art, design, architecture, and/or tech-related field.

Experience: Two to five years of shop, studio, or facility management and technical expertise in art, design, or architecture. Experience in an educational institution, non-profit institution, or other educational environments, with a strong track record of managerial experience. Must have experience working with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Skills:
  • Technical skills and abilities in traditional woodworking and plaster and the ability to demonstrate safe use of materials and equipment
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Effective and professional written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of faculty, technicians, staff, and students
  • Familiarity with G-Suite, email, spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of shop safety and environmental health hazards, including emergency procedures

Supplemental Information:

Must be able to lift 25/50 lbs regularly.

This is an in-person, on-the-ground position. The position will involve the support of shops and tools in multiple spaces and will require monitoring and surveying spaces in various locations on the Brooklyn campus.
